Find Your Options

Pregnancy Options
An unexpected pregnancy can put you in a state of shock and disbelief, especially if you are taking birth control. No matter how you may feel about your potential pregnancy, First Step PRC is here to help you understand your options and receive the best-individualized care in Bangor, Maine.
Option #1: Parenting
Pregnancy and motherhood are the most beautiful and significantly life-altering events that I have ever experienced. — Elisabeth Hasselbeck
Parenting is one of the most wonderful experiences you will have. A woman's life and experiences are now intertwined with another's. The passage of time will forever be marked by another. She will be an eyewitness to, as well as a supporter and encourager of, another’s lifetime of firsts!
There will be challenges along the way and moments of defeat. It will require everything she has at times as she seeks to put another’s well-being in front of her own, yet most women who choose this option will tell you it is worth it. Society often says a mother won’t be able to achieve her goals when she has a child, but there are so many resources available to help women achieve their goals alongside motherhood. Children become the greatest addition to your life, not a hindrance. Make an appointment to find out more.
Option #2: Adoption
I am a living testament that you can be adopted and successful. — Daunte Culpepper
The option of adoption is one that many women struggle with. The thought of carrying a child for nine months and enduring labor and delivery only to place that child in another's care is tough. Adoption should be seen as a beautiful choice that a woman makes, showing her to be selfless and courageous. Motivated by love, a woman can give the child an opportunity for a life full of potential.
A common misconception is that placing the child up for adoption means the child will end up a ward of the State and into foster care with years of instability while they go between homes. Though foster care has its place, the ultimate goal of foster care is the reunification of families. It is meant to be a temporary placeholder where adoption is permanent and through a different means. When you choose adoption, you are not choosing foster care.
Option #3: Abortion
I really didn't know there were two sides to the abortion issue. — Norma McCorvey, AKA Roe.
It's estimated that nearly one in four women will experience an abortion in their reproductive years. The reality is that, like adoption, abortion is a permanent decision that will result in loss. Because of this, abortion must be a personal decision of the woman bearing the weight of that reality. Oftentimes, there can be external pressures from outside opinions, societal pressures, financial strain, or even personal shame and regret that can influence this decision. Every woman has the right to process the reality of a pregnancy without outside influences. At First Step, we welcome this conversation in a non-judgmental and loving environment.
Choosing an abortion may come with moments of grief as well as emotional and physical discomfort. Some women experience reproductive health issues and mental health struggles following their abortion. Whether you choose the pill or need a procedure, any abortion is a medical procedure and comes with its own set of risks. Some women have admitted to struggling with depression, anxiety, and suicidal thoughts after their abortion. It is crucial to speak with someone who is not involved or has the opportunity to make a profit off of your choice. Even if you think your mind is set on an abortion, reach out to us so our nurse can give you the tools you need to make an informed decision from a place of knowledge.
